I’ve watched every episode of Burn’s “The War,” sitting there unmoving and spellbound. I was in the Navy, a Vietnam era vet but never saw any action. How much action can one see on a submarine anyway? Nevertheless, the Cold War was still influencing political thought when I served from 1973-1976. I volunteered, unlike most WW II and Vietnam War vets. Watching “The War” gives me reason to wonder about our human condition. Is the war in Iraq or the conflict in Afghanistan any different from past wars? How do you measure war’s worth? Will some future “Ken Burns” document our present conflicts? Will some old gardener sit, watch and wonder how we can kill one minute and love the next?
